Oregon repeats as Junior Greco-Roman World Duals champion, ahead of the USA All-Stars

CONCORD, Calif. – Oregon repeated as the champions at the 2013 Junior Greco-Roman World Duals on the final day of competition on Sunday.

The event is a featured international competition held in the United States as part of World Wrestling Month.

The dual meet portion of the event was completed Sunday morning, then an individual tournament was held. The final team placements were determined based upon points scored from both the dual meet and individual tournament portion of the tournament.

Oregon nailed down the team title with a strong effort in the individual tournament, with five individual champions and three runners-up. Oregon champions were Ronnie Bresser (56 kg), Dylan Holcomb (66 kg), Tyler Cowger (70 kg), Kyle Bateman (79 kg) and Wyatt Spears (125 kg).

Placing second was the USA All-Stars, which had four individual champions: Andrew Ibarra of California (52 kg), Kevon Powell of Ohio (59 kg), John Kenyon of Idaho (63 kg) and Burke Paddock of New York (74 kg).

Powell was named Lower Weight MVP and Paddock received the Upper Weight MVP after dominant performances in the dual meets and the tournament.

The Best Match was between Ronnie Bresser of Oregon and Simon Andersson of Scandinavia at 56 kg. The best technician was Kevin Mejia of Honduras, who was competing at 98 kg for the CYC team.

As part of World Wrestling Month, a focus of the event is to bring wrestlers and fans together from around the world in a show of solidarity to support Olympic wrestling.

This is the 14th year of this event .The first time an international team came for competition was in 2000, with a German Junior Team. Over the years, teams from Germany, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Hungary, Mexico and Honduras have all participated in this event. It was developed as part of the legacy of a major Senior Greco-Roman event, the Concord Cup, which was held for 20 years in the community in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

The German Exchange Team has wrestled it's way across Oregon.   After stops in Tillamook, and Corvallis, they are wresting another Dual tonight in Sweet Home.   Next on the schedule is a Dual with a combined team from Thurston and Lowell and a few other local wrestlers in the "Lowell Coliseum" in Lowell on Monday night at 6:00.  They have additional stops in Stayton and Salem before returning home.  Lets get out and show our support for our Visitors, the Sport of Wrestling, and our own Oregon Wrestlers.  Makes a great night out for the family!   If anyone has pictures of the Duals we would love to have you post them on the "Oregon Wrestler" Facebook page.  Oregon will be sending an Exchange Team to Germany this summer.

Stuff we think is cool...
